Centre
of the coin is a foreground representation of Earth Globe,
inclined to right with inside the inscription WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME.
Three
ears come from back of the globe and goes into the external ring of the
coin. One is a wheatear, one a rice-ear and one a ear of corn,
the
three cereals represent the base elements for world food. On the right
of the globe the character I and R are for "Repubblica Italiana" below
the engraver mintmark Uliana Pernazza. To the upper left of the globe
is the mint mark ‘R’ denoting ROMA and under the globe is the
year ‘2004’. The 12 stars of the European Union are placed around
the outer circle of the coin..
The coin commemorate the World Food Program's fifth decade of delivering food aid to the world's hungry.
